From Air Itam to UFOREA.

Twenty minutes down from the hill, past Kek Lok Si, and out to the coast at Tanjong Tokong. It's an easy on-island hop — no bridge, no toll — and it pairs perfectly with a morning at Penang Hill or a bowl of Air Itam laksa before the kids burn it all off in the glowing LED ball pit. For Air Itam families, this is the rainy-afternoon rescue that turns into a weekly ritual.

the drive

Down the hill and out to the coast.

Setting off from Air Itam, the simplest route drops you down Jalan Air Itam — past the market with its famous asam laksa stalls and the turn-off up to Kek Lok Si — and heads east toward the George Town side. Stay with the main road as it feeds onto Jalan Utama and then Jalan Burma, skirting the top edge of the city. It's a familiar stretch for most Air Itam families: the temple traffic thins once you're past the market, and after that it's a steady run.

Where Jalan Burma meets the sea you'll pick up Gurney Drive heading north along the seafront — the promenade, the palm trees, the strait opening up on your right. Stay on the coast road and it becomes Jalan Tanjong Tokong. Island 88 is a few minutes further on: a glass-fronted building set back from the road, with the UFOREA wordmark on the upper floors. Door to door, allow about twenty minutes on a normal morning. On a weekend when Gurney is busy, or during Kek Lok Si's Chinese New Year lights, give yourself half an hour.

Coming down from Penang Hill itself? From the lower station at Air Itam it's the same road — down to the market, then east and out to the coast. Many families make a full morning of it: the funicular up the hill first thing, then straight to UFOREA once little legs are tired of walking and want to run instead.

a half-day plan

Pair it with a Penang Hill morning.

Air Itam sits at the foot of the island's two big landmarks, so the trip out to UFOREA slots neatly onto the back of a hill-and-temple morning. The pattern that works best:

  1. 8:30 — Penang Hill or Kek Lok Si first. Do the walking-and-looking part while everyone's fresh — the funicular up Bukit Bendera, or the climb through Kek Lok Si to the Kuan Yin statue.
  2. 10:30 — Air Itam laksa before you go. A quick bowl at the market, or a kopi stop. Fuel for the afternoon, and a nappy change before the drive.
  3. 11:00 — Down to the coast, ~20 minutes. East through George Town's top edge, then north along Gurney Drive to Tanjong Tokong.
  4. 11:30 – 14:30 — UFOREA, three hours. Long enough for Discovery Cove, Galaxy Zone, Adventure Trails and a whiz around Mini Town. The wristband stamp gives you all-day re-entry.
  5. 14:30 — Lunch at Island 88, or head home. The cafés downstairs do char koay teow, dim sum and Western. Then a short, toll-free hop back up to Air Itam for nap time.
Parking on arrival.

Island 88 has a multi-level car park directly under the building. First hour free, a small flat rate afterwards. There's a drop-off lane at the lobby — handy for spilling everyone out of the car before you go and find a bay.
